Today we share the story of one of the creators of Chilean Olive Oil: Jose Miguel Honorato, Gerente General of Vina Maghten
Read our interview with him below to get a glimpse into the lives of the people bringing Chilean Olive Oil into the world, and a personal view of Chile as a country.
Where are you from, and how did you make your way to this grove/location?
I was born in the town called De Las Cabras, which is part of the 6th region of Chile. I studied in Las Garzaz School of Agriculture, and received my Agricultural Technician certification.
I began working with the olive industry right when the initiative was launched, when my superiors requested I become in charge of the olives. I now live in the town of Pencahue, the 7th region of Chile. I arrived here after working in the grape and wine growing industry, which originally also controlled the olive plantations.
What do you like most about Chile?
Above all the people. Also the diverse climate and the beautiful geography.
Describe a typical day.
My day starts early, I go around the fields and I provide my personnel with instructions. Later, I continue with my office administration tasks. At the end of the day, I go back home and have a completely normal family life. On certain occasions I share time with friends and extended family members.
What makes you proud about your work?
Without a doubt, what I love the most about my job is working in the olive fields. I like to see how the olive fields have evolved from when we first planted them. The greatest pride is when harvesting season arrives and the results are what you had hoped.
How often do you use extra virgin olive oil, in what ways?
The truth is that since I started working with it, I use it very frequently and in all types of foods and recipes.
What is the history of this grove?
The best story I have, without a doubt, regarding my job is having seen this Project been born and having been able to participate from its inception until today when it is a reality. And obtaining the recognition for what has been achieved.
What makes Olive Oil from Chile Special?
Without a doubt, it is the superb quality of the olive oil, which is achieved by how well the orchards are managed, the processes and the climate conditions which are favorable to cultivation. It is also important to consider the passion and professionalism of all the individuals who, in one way or another, participate in the process of making Chilean Olive Oil.
